Interview with Sting
by Gavin Duenas

Picture
On Wednesday the 6th of June I took part in a conference call with TNA star Sting, who will be challenging Bobby Roode this Sunday at Slammiversary for the World Heavyweight Title.

A 27-year veteran of the industry, Sting is widely considered the greatest wrestler of the modern era never to have appeared in WWE. He has main evented in the NWA, WCW and TNA for over two decades, and is a fourteen-time world champion.

With his laid-back, friendly but very measured responses, I could tell from the interview that Sting is a master of diplomacy, which has no doubt helped his political standing in the companies he has worked for! However, he certainly provided some honest and thought-provoking insight into his role as a locker room veteran in TNA. I got the impression that Sting is a wrestler who feels comfortable and secure in his position, and who is more than willing to act as a mentor to the younger talent.

I was able to ask Sting a number of questions. Firstly, I asked him what had been the biggest changes he’d seen in wrestling over his long career, and whether he intended to write an autobiography. I followed up that question with an enquiry as to whether he keeps in touch with his mid 80s tag team partner Jim Hellwig, who went on to have a successful career as the Ultimate Warrior.

Later in the call I spoke to Sting about the star-making match with Ric Flair in 1988 that catapulted him to permanent main event status, and asked why it seems to be so much more difficult today to establish new main eventers. Sting’s answer was very eloquent and interesting. As a follow up, I asked a question from the 606 v2 forum about whether he’d ever vetoed a storyline proposal because of his religious beliefs. His response was amusing in its bluntness.

The Slammiversary event will be aired in the UK free of charge on Challenge TV next Wednesday (the 13th) at 10pm.

I hope you enjoy listening to the interview. My questions can be heard at 25:40 and 47:09.

Editors note - I would personally like to thank both Sting for taking the time out of their hectic schedules to talk to us. In addition, I would also like to thank Simon at TNA UK who has helped make these interviews possible
